Case study | Elite Athlete Centre, Hotel and Student Village, Loughborough University

The Brief

Loughborough University is renowned for its excellence in research, teaching and enterprise and the contribution it makes to sport and activity. Today Loughborough is ranked first in the world for sports related subjects, and its new Elite Athlete Centre, hotel and student village (which operates 24-hours a day, 365 days per year) remains true to its original ethos: that every student will have the opportunity to play sport regardless of their ability or current activity level.

The Elite Athlete Centre, Hotel and student village is the UK’s first ever Active Campus. Built by Bowmer & Kirkland, it provides a unique training camp designed to cater for all athletes including those with disabilities.

We were contacted by specialist electrical installation engineers, Electract Limited to provide a design for four bespoke feature lighting columns to complement the functional street lighting.

The Solution

Working with Electract, we designed and supplied four 6M columns each finished in graphite RAL9016. Four 4000K Sonic LED projectors with glare shields, minimising glare and providing a comfortable light, are installed around each column shaft in a spiral arrangement from 5.5M to 4M. A combination of 17° and 37° optics, direct light to exactly where needed.

Richard Perkins, Business Development Manager, Electract Limited commented:

“We were thrilled with the service and professionalism shown by Matt and the team at LPS.  We were tasked by the client with providing a decorative solution and needed a specialist lighting provider to take the concept design and turn it into a reality.  Having drawn a blank with other manufactures we were delighted when LPS took up the challenge and delivered a first-class solution.”
